Achievements

Rail Trail
A shortlist of some of the achievements of the last four years
In Division 6:
- Rebuilding roads like Tooth St, Ibis Blvd, and the Esplanade
- A new carpark and drop-off zone for school traffic in Endeavour Way
- New carparks for customers in Old Maryborough Rd and Murphy St
- Footpaths and cycleways in the Division, such as Mant St, Murphy St and Martin St
- New toilets where needed
- And little things including ones I promised in 2016, like ending pay parking in Main St Pialba; installing a beach shower at Gatakers; and new seating on the Esplanade at the end of Banksia St
Across the Region:
- Major upgrades to Seafront Oval, including the adventure playground and skate park
- An extra 3.5 km on the Rail Trail, with a major planning report prepared ready to seek government funding for the further development of it
- Community and cultural initiatives like our Writers’ Festival, improvements to the Regional Gallery programs and staffing, Food and Groove, support for community programs in conjunction with Hervey Bay Neighbourhood Centre
- Getting our Regional Gallery back on track with better budget allocations and a boost to staffing
- Preserving heritage, like saving the Pialba Memorial Hall, and establishing a new scheme to help refurbish Maryborough’s heritage buildings
- Starting work on our green streets initiatives to make our streets more attractive, and cooler
- Getting started on planning reviews which will lead to better urban spaces, more people-friendly suburbs, and the preservation of more vegetated open space
- And more little things that make a big difference: getting trees and shrubs planted along the Augustus fence at the entry to Hervey Bay
Governance:
- Keeping rates down. Our budgets have seen net general rate increases at either zero or below CPI
- Reducing debt. Council has frozen borrowings to reduce debt, with borrowings down from about $140M in June 2016 to $73M in December 2019
- Improving openness and accountability: on my initiative we introduced video recording and live streaming for council meetings, among other measures
- Working with government on reforms: I have been an integral part of Council’s team working through a raft of reforms in the sector.
